In 2010 near Denver, fire chief Wyatt suffered injuries rescuing a woman from a blaze.  The next day he kisses his wife and two kids as he leaves to join his friends exploring caves in Sedona.

Five decades later he and his comrades leave the cave to a world shattered by the Change.  Feeling left behind as his buddies have gained supernatural powers while all he has is grief over the loss of his family and guilt for not being there when the calamity occurred, Wyatt lacks hope and detests himself for betraying his memories by his attraction to Remington Truth who he treats shabbily as a defense mechanism to avoid caring.  Remy feels the same way about the only man she cannot understand especially his hostility towards her.  As she heads to Envy, zombies and Strangers hunt for Remy and the crystal her late grandfather gave her while Wyatt’s compulsion to protect other propels him to find and accompany her.

The latest Envy Chronicles romantic apocalyptic fantasy (see Night Forbidden and Night Betrayed) is an exciting entry as the last of the Sedona fab five to star finds the truth sets him free to love again.  Fast-paced with the trademark blighted land in the background, series fans will relish this entry as Joss Ware provides a strong thriller even if we agree with the heroine that Wyatt is a dick.

Needing to start over, horse breeder Sara Shield moves to Terra Minor where she opens up a ranch.  However, her prize Andalusian, Danublan, escaped before he arrived at his new home.  Her neighbor Bonnie Dackelov informs her that another nearby rancher insane Zetithian, Jerden Morokovitz, found a wild horse.  Sara visits him having already heard rumors he sold himself for 1000 credits per tryst in a brothel.  Jerden gives her back her horse.

However, he is stunned by his reaction to Sara as he should not want her since he emotionally collapsed with the murder of his lover; yet he is attracted to the newcomer.  Jerden realizes she can mend his broken soul, but first he must mend her broken heart.  However, besides the killer who destroyed his mind with murder, others have an interest to keep the pair apart with Danublan the obvious easy target.

The latest Cat Star Chronicles romantic science fiction (see Fugitive, Virgin and Stud) is an exciting thriller of healing as the protagonists fall in heat and love.  However, it is the adversaries who have differing motives but identical goals that keep the plot fresh by enhancing the enjoyable tale with taut suspense.

Divorcee Tessa Barnum wonders what next will befall her as her already shaky world seems in the final stages of implosion.  An artist who has not painted in three years while never having a showing, she struggles with paying her rent and buying groceries.

On another earth, brilliant scientist-mathematician Professor Brian Tennyson teaches at Yale though he prefers baseball.  He pursued the love of his life Tessa Barnum the cello player who was his age as a student in his Calculus class.  When he tests his decoherence theory based on quantum chromodynamics, Brian lands in a parallel universe in which the divorced Tessa Barnum is a failed artist.

This is an entertaining romantic science fiction frolic with a powerful philosophical theme of swing the bat even though you may strike out.  Brian is a fun genius whose physics humor and Star Trek trivia add depth to his travelogue.  Tessa is a bit more complicated as she struggles to get back into playing the game after making bad decisions in her life.  Readers will enjoy their changing relationship as love proves to be the most powerful force in the Slatton multi-universe.

Gia the pilot is at a bar on a planet so far from earth, she can’t exchange currency; instead a barter system thrives.  Since she wants sex she needs a way to persuade Los the bartender to scratch her itch on her ship.  An empath like every native, Los declines as he needs more than a one night stand to satisfy him; which leaves her to believe she is the serpent in Eden.  Making matters worse is when euphoric Gen calls her as Gia is jealous though happy that her friend has found divine ecstasy with Rhys (see No Limits).

Gia and Zan the space pirate meet and feel a strong attraction.  They share the best sex either ever has had, but her reactions frighten and embarrass Gia.  However, during an incredible carnal encounter, Gia’s health guard fails flooding her with her partner’s memories.  Knowing his darkest secret and on the run with him, other tsuris follows them until they are at the mercy of his abusive father.

No Mercy is an enjoyable erotic science fiction romance as long as the audience accepts various intercourse (same sex, ménage a trois and especially the lead couple) occurring frequently including during improbable moments.  Still with a wonderful lead couple, a sadistic vile villain and a strong support cast, fans will relish the fun erotic adventures of the pilot and the pirate.

Once again with a nod to Captain America, Lisa Renee Jones provides a great romantic military fantasy.  The action-packed story line grips the reader from the moment Damion’s mission fails and never slows down as readers will wonder whether love can supersede intense brainwashing.   Fans will enjoy this Project Zodius (see The Legend of Michael) as the two adversarial groups of Super Soldiers bring a deadlier female element into the war.

Cat Star Chronicles: Virgin

Sourcebooks, Jun 1 2011, $7.99

ISBN: 9781402251658

On Luxaria Twelve, Captain Jack lectures starship pilot Daxtronian “Dax” Vandilorsk, a Zetithian like her spouse, for remaining “The Great Virgin”.  Dax understands the need to sire the next generation after the near extinction caused by the treacherous Nedwuts, but has found no one who entices him.  That is until now.  The waitress at the bar has Dax thinking erotic thoughts.  However her abusive boyfriend Lars notices Sax staring at Avondia “Ava” Karon and warns the cat to stay away or else.

Sick of Lars who beat her and the dead end job on a backwater planet, Ava decides to go home to Acquerei where boring (Russ) supersedes vicious (Lars).  She buys a one way ticket on Dax’s vessel.  The Zetithian is euphoric as he now has the opportunity to smell his passenger and determine if she is his one.

This entry focuses almost entirely on the relationship between the lead couple as he is sort of like the Forty Year Old Virgin and she has become relationship-phobic.  There is a secondary plot involving the heroine’s father, but that is minor in comparison to Dax’s amusing clumsy courtship of Ava assisted by his sidekick womanizing Waroun and Kots the droid matchmaker.  Series fans will enjoy this heated Cat Star Chronicles (see Fugitive and Hero).

Though unfair, former KGB agent but now the Ostrov submarine Captain Nikolai Romanoff finds his secretive past coming back to haunt him.  He knows he has sunk very far from when he loyally served Russia.

American Julie Severin loathes the Russians as she holds them accountable for the death of her father during the Cold War.  She is on board a Russian sub under the Arctic ice pretending to be a reporter but instead spying on her hosts.  Nikolai has been assigned to extract information from the American visitor.  However, each detests the attraction they have for the other that started the evening before when they first met ashore.  As their seemingly polar opposite objectives merge, they fall in love while facing deadly danger together in an isolated scenario.

The first Men In Uniform romantic suspense is a taut thriller in which the Red Heat generated by the lead couple melts the polar ice faster than global warming.  The freshness in this exhilarating tale are the location and the heroic Russian who is a wonderful unique protagonist especially in a romance.  Readers will relish this tense story as love puts an exclamation point end to the remnants of the Cold War.

Marcella Burnard

Berkley, May 3 2011, $15.00

The Claugh nib Dovvyth spy corps operative Major Damen Sinkrivik abducts enemy xenobiologist Jayleia Durante while she is battling to end a devastating plague.  Ignoring her people’s plight as he is loyal only to the empire, Damen sees her as a pawn to capture Jayleia’s outlaw father, the Tagreth Federated spymaster Zain Durante, declared a traitor.

Others also seek Zain as many believe he is the one person who might end the horde of traitors supporting the vicious Chekydrans.  Jayleia persuades the dynamic Damon they need to team up if they are to stop the mercenaries sent to capture her in order to use her to get at her dad because the empire could be at stake.

The second venture into the Bernard universe (see Enemy Within) is a great romantic science fiction starring a strong cast and an incredibly vivid galaxy in the throes of a terrible war between two empires and traitors lurking within both sides.  The story line is faster than the speed of light as the action keeps on coming.  Damen is caught between falling in love with the daughter of a key enemy and his loyalty to his side; Zain wants choices in her life though the strife and her father’s changing status limit her.  Readers will relish Marcella Burnard’s exhilarating thriller in outer space.

The Imperium forces are creating a gizmo to destroy space portals.  If successful it will devastate economies of most worlds as inert space travel would halt.  A Depression would occur leaving countless people in trouble.

In Asphodel, the Federation Military’s Phantom Corps leaders assign top assassin Andrei Solace to prevent the calamity from happening.  To assist him, they hire his former girlfriend mercenary Piper Roundtree as his pilot.  As they work together, eleven standard years since they last saw one another seem like last night; as their passion is hotter than a sun.  However both understand the mission comes first though sex is not a distant second.

Readers will feel Laura Dane Mesmerized us with this exhilarating second chance in space military romantic science fiction.  The story line is faster than Piper can pilot a vessel through canyons, but it is the relationship between the mercenary who has people depending on her and the military assassin who has a universe depending on him, who make the tale work.  Sub-genre fans will enjoy the Phantom Corps entry (see Insatiable) as the only time out is for bickering and lovemaking.
